How do I prepare for a career in real estate?
  1. Talk with agents in the business. Ask lots of questions. This will help you assess whether a career in real estate is right for you. Take the Real Estate Simulator Assessment!

  2. Be financially prepared. There are several start-up costs when beginning your real estate career. Some fixed costs include: the pre-license course, the state exam and license fee. You may need to make an investment in technology tools such as a cell phone, laptop, database software, etc. New agents should always have at least 6 months of living expenses in reserve. It can take a few months to get your business going.

  3. Obtain a Utah Real Estate license. Successful completion of a 90-hour salesperson's pre-license course and passing the state exam is required. You may attend any number of real estate schools.

  4. Interview with several real estate brokerage firms. You may begin the interview process while you are taking the pre-license course. All real estate salespersons must be affiliated with a real estate broker. If you have not affiliated with a broker by the time you take the state exam, your license will be kept with the Utah Real Estate Commission until you activate it by affiliating with a broker. 5. Begin your career. Start personal marketing and contacting your sphere of influence to ensure everyone knows you have begun your real estate career. Participate in additional training, sales meetings, caravans, and other activities your company hosts. Build relationships with clients, fellow agents, and others you know who can send you referrals.

  6. Continue learning. The Utah Real Estate Commission also requires that all licensees continue learning by taking continuing education courses. After the first year, six hours per year are required for license renewal. Licenses renew every two years on the last day of the month the license was issued.
